I was about to ask him if he would continue to try to persuade me to let him have his way with me when we were disturbed by the sound of voices ascending the stairs. I made out the voices of Kristina, Phoebe and Serena, probably going to Kristina’s room. I broke off and remained quiet. Kristina stopped outside Kai’s room and knocked on the door.

‘Go away’ he said.

‘That’s not very nice! Can we come in?’

‘No Kris’ he said, and I guess she knew from the tone of his voice that he meant it.

‘Fine, I don’t even want to know what you’re doing in there’. They all giggled and ascended the next flight of stairs to Kristina’s room.

‘It’s a good thing we didn’t … you know’ I whispered.

‘I would have locked the door’ he replied, not whispering.

I looked at him as if he were mad.

‘That was a joke’ he said. ‘She’s not supposed to be here. She said she was staying over at Serena’s tonight.’

‘Lower your voice. How are you going to smuggle me out without us getting caught?’ I asked, still whispering.

‘Why do I need to smuggle you out?’

I explained that risking the ex-girlfriend running into the new girlfriend under the circumstances was ill advised. Now it was my turn to smirk at his discomfort.
